Tights Squeeze: An Article from Tablet Magazine

Tablet Magazine is an online magazine geared toward modern Jews that runs the gamut from news and politics, to art and culture, observance, and overall Judaism. Recently, the article Tights Squeeze: How Much Modesty Will Ever Be Enough for Orthodox Girls from author Avital Chizhik made its way into the observance section of the daily magazine, and it is a positively stellar read. Written with sincerity and unabashed candor, Chizhik was unafraid at parlaying the highly internal and  devastatingly external conflicts that exist in today's Modern Orthodox world, especially for that of a young Modern Orthodox girl.

There is this "Keeping Up With The Joneses" mentality the young Yeshiva girls have adopted, where one "mitzvah" leads to another until you are suddenly Charedi, and subject to the whim of every Talmud scholar who you will maybe date and then support for the rest of your life. Not that this is a wrong way of living by any means, but the pressure to top your fellow Jewess in her mitzvah count is becoming ridiculous, and quite honestly, the idea of a mitzvah has been taken completely out of context; if wearing tights is a mitzvah, I'm a perpetual sinner once that mercury hits 70 degrees.

Chizhik's article bares an honesty many are not willing to expose at the risk of being deemed too modern for this highly "schticky" world-- because let's face it, this is all schtick at the end of the day, something this blog is ardently opposed to. Yes, I wear only skirts and wear longer sleeves, but that's a personal choice. I have said it before, and I'll say it again: Modesty is a guideline by which to live your life, not a mandate. If you choose to cover your elbows, cover your knees, and heck, wear tights, then power to ya sister. But if you don't, that's fine too. Honestly.

#JewishFashionistaProblems

Boo. I love me a fabulous frock, and both Jessica Alba and Rooney Mara are certainly taking fabulosity to a different level. But let's face it, Oakies; these dresses are so close to modest, but fall just short with the sheer sleeves. Now don't get me wrong-- these ladies are still pretty modest given what the rest of Hollywood is wearing, but this is like 75% of a dress to me, when all I really want is sleeves! Although, I must say that the sheer portions really even out each dress; and all leather dress, for example is not ideal, so the sheer top really balances out Jessica's dress nicely; similarly, the striking red of Rooney's dress is tamed by the delicate top.

On a somewhat different note-- are you noticing any trends here, aside from the sheer tops? Tiers, for example. Just saying. Keep your eye out for skirts and dresses that look this way.

Ray Ray McAdmas, why oh why!? You were so close to modest perfection... then you had to go and open up that back for us! Wahh.

Now, don't get me wrong, this Marchesa dress makes my jaw drop, and damn if you don't look stellar in it. As my eighth grade social studies teacher used to say, "you're close, but no cigar". Thanks Mrs. Richter, and thank you Rachel. #JewishFashionistaProblems

Another cigar-less celeb: Leona Lewis. First off, not many can pull off this ball gown look outside of their wedding day, but Leona doesn't do a half bad job. Too bad that neck is plunging to places that shan't be named. I don't quite know how to feel about the blazer/ball gown combo, but I don't totally hate it. I just don't love it either. In any case, #JewishFashionistaProblems

#JewishFashionistaProblems

Welcome to this new little feature I have concocted. It's super trendy in that it involves, obviously, the trending hash tag, and also because there seems to be this need to put the word "problems" after your defined identity (ie: Guido Problems, courtesy of the Jersey Shore).

Since I am a Jewish fashionista (as are most of my readers, no doubt), I have come to encounter many an item I would have like to have purchased, BUT it was either too short, too plunging, too open in the back, or some other non-modest issue. Either that, or I see a celebrity who ALMOST makes the modest cut, but then has her entire back exposed. So Close.  Hence-- #JewishFashionistaProblems

No doubt you too have encountered this, so every time I find myself frustrated at wanting something I can't have (what woman doesn't?), I will be sure to vent my frustration to you all.

Take for example this dress from ASOS. Now, you know I can never knock ASOS because I secretly want to have its babies. But this dress is so darn adorable. Oh, that I wish it had sleeves and came to the knee!! (ARE YOU LISTENING ASOS?). It would be so much classier if it had a three-quarter sleeve and a knee-length hem. Am I right ladies?? Can I get an Amen?
