#MetGala2014: The Ultimate Let-Downs in the History of Let-Downs

I suppose that that title is a bit over exaggerated, but on a night like the Met Gala, one has a chance to showcase the craziness that is the fashion world. Problem is-- not everyone can pull it off. Some ladies looked really horrible (Kate Upton) and others were just so drab, it kinda looked like they were just bored. I want to stress that this is not necessarily a worst dressed list-- many if not all of these dresses are beautiful and on other occasions may have very well stood out as exceptional. At the Met Ball though, they just sort of fell flat.

Jessica Alba in DVF
Here's a beautiful and stunning woman who looked truly ravishing but disappointed last night. I am pretty sure we have seen many incarnations of this dress, in this color, on this woman in the past and I just wish we could have seen her take a larger risk. This was one of my biggest let-downs of the night.

Rachel McAdams in Ralph Lauren
Beautiful. Really truly beautiful, but boring as all hell.

Elizabeth Olsen in Miu Miu
Wtf. No.

Kate Upton in Dolce and Gabbana
OK Charro, we get it, you have the breasts of a God. You also have the headdress of a paper mache  pinata at a South American funeral.

Chrissy Tiegenin Ralph Lauren
That collar is so unflattering on anyone who is not Queen Elizabeth I.

Beyonce in Givenchy
Beyonce usually brings it in a BIG way, so while I love this gown very much, I was sooooo underwhelmed with the overall look for the evening. She still looked remarkable and I think she is a class unto her own, but we all know Bey could have blown it out of the water in more of a statement dress.

Nicole Richie in Donna Karan Atelier
This was so unremarkable in so many ways. Then again, I suppose a ball gown would have eaten her alive on her petite waif-like body. Still, she could have done better.

Kim Kardashian in Lanvin
It's go big or go home at this event. Kim can go home. Let me say that this dress was truly beautiful and classy (especially for Kim!), but this is the woman who is getting married at the Palace of Versailles, people! She wore this. Heck, she was fancier walking into frozen yogurt the other day than she was in this. Disappointed.

#MetGala2014: The Best Dressed!

This is the one event of the year where what you wear is the ONLY thing that matters. Yes, the Oscars and the Globes are important to the fashion world, but at their core, they are award shows for the acting community. The Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is pure fashion at its very essence. In this case, you are what you wear, and when you show up to this event, you better look good.

Below are the list of my favorites and I tried especially hard to focus on the ones that had ball gowns seeing as that was the theme, but there were some truly beautiful looks all around. I really appreciated the ladies who took the ball gown theme to heart because some showed up in kinda of drab gowns that barely qualified as a dress. Some even wore pants-- ugh, I don't want to talk about it. Most of all, take note that this is purely objective. At an event like this, where the dresses are borderline costume, opinions and tastes tend to vary-- but keep in mind this list was made with the Costume Institute in mind. These are the ladies that were more than just beautiful--they were fashion.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Oscar de la Renta
This is the best thing to happen to 2014 yet. This is the Costume Institute Gala-- if ever to show up in an avante garde dress that's borderline costume, this is it.

Karlie Kloss in Oscar de la Renta
Black and gold is my favorite color combination of life. The brocade fabric on this gown is so rich, the silhouette a modern take on the traditional ball gown, and her elegance is as natural as it is beautiful. Also, she's a Victroria's Secret model, so she's hot.

Karolina Kurkova in Marchesa
THIS is what the met ball is all about! Rich, fantastical, avante garde looks that push the boundaries of fashion--and the ability to fit through a doorway-- in ways that are otherwise dull for a regular red carpet. THIS is how one shows up to the Costume Institute Gala.

Lupita Nyong'o in Prada
This was the best of the non-gown crowd of the evening. Lupita knew just what to wear to a ball that was all about avante garde costume-like fashion. She's like a couture Jane of the Jungle and I like it! Seriously beyond obsessed with this look from head to to toe.

Chanel Iman in Topshop
This was one of the prettiest most delicate gowns of the evening. Definitely a throwback to true glamor. The guy next to her leaves much to be desired though.

Lily Aldridge in Michael Kors
This was one of the more romantic dresses of the evening and it perfectly showcased the artistry of dressmaking and draping and overall craft. This is a dress to be reckoned with. Plus it's pretty.

Victoria Beckham in Victoria Beckham
So meta. This is the column dress to end all column dresses. PS I now need to go on a diet.

Honorable mentions in the best dressed department:
Dakota Johnson, Kendall Jenner
